Korean Air magazine 'Morning Calm' has published!

My interview is a part of this article, and glad it has both Korean and English.

“Finding my voice was influenced by my teachers,” said Roh Jung-yeon, a graduating MFA Illustration as Visual
Essay student, who previously only practiced realism but was encouraged by several of SVA’s professors to experiment until she found her narrative in silkscreening.
With two undergraduate degrees — a bachelor’s in illustration from SVA and a bachelor’s in fine arts from Kyung
Hee University — the young Korean has always studied her craft. Now, having won an unprecedented number of
awards from Society of Illustrators and having had her work published in the Op-Ed pages of The
New York Times, Roh has a future and opportunities.
Once she graduates, she’ll live out her dream as an illustrator in New York City with an artist’s work visa.

석사 졸업을 앞둔 한국인 유학생 노정연 씨는 이곳에서 비로소 자신의 스타일을 찾았다고 고백한다. 전에는 오직 사실주의풍으로만 그렸는데 새로운 시도를 멈추지 말라는 지도 교수의 격려에 힘입어 실크스크린 작업을 시작했고, 덕분에 자신만의 화풍을발견한 것이다. 일러스트레이터학회에서 전례 없이 많은 상을 받고 <뉴욕 타임스>의 칼럼에 일러스트를 그린 노정연 씨의 미래는매우 밝다. 졸업 후 예술가 자격으로 취업 비자를 받아 뉴욕에서 일러스트레이터로 일할 거라는꿈도 머지않아 현실이 될 것이다.
졸업생들의 성공 스토리 현재 학교에는 51개국에서 모인 학생들이 성공을 꿈꾸며 공부하고 있다.약 3500명의 학부생과 500명의 대학원생이 재학 중이며, 일러스트레이션・만화학과에는 591명의 학부생과 39명의 대학원생이 있다. 전 세계에서 많은 학생이 모여드는 이유는 훌륭한 커리큘럼과 화려한 교수진 때문이다. 작가, 디자이너, 영화 제작자, 사진가 등 현직에서 활약하는 1000여 명의 전문가가 교수진에 이름을 올리고 있다. 그들은 실시간으로 업계의 소식을 전달할 뿐 아니라 학생들의 멘토가 되어 진심 어린 조언도 아끼지 않는다.
노정연 씨도 이런 점 때문에 스쿨 오브 비주얼 아트를 선택했다. 무엇보다 그녀의 우상인 데이비드 샌들린이 이곳의 교수로있다. 샌들린은 왕성하게 활동하며 이름을 알려 가는 화가, 판화가, 만화가다. <뉴요커>와 <2009 미국 우수 만화 선집> 같은 매체에서도 그의 작품을 소개할 정도다. 일러스트레이터이자 디자이너인 빅터 코엔 역시 학교의 명성을 상징하는 교수다.

교수진 못지않게 졸업생 역시 화려한 커리어를 자랑한다.1947년에 설립한 일러스트레이션・만화학과는 지금까지 많은 예술가를 배출했는데, 영화 <엑스맨>과 <유주얼 서스펙트>의 감독브라이언 싱어, 마블 코믹스의 전 편집장 조 퀘사다, 애니메이션 <아이스 에이지>와 <로봇>의 공동 감독 카를루스 살다냐, 연재 만화 <머츠>의 작가 패트릭 맥도넬 등이 이 학교 졸업생이다.

HOLY SHIT! Another Gold Cube from Art Directors Club 90th!

I'm sure America LOVES me to stay here.
When I first logged into the award results page, I distrusted my eyes.
Winning three gold cubes in a year could be just "never-happening" thing, so I happily cried and asked ADC.

They said,

"The jury wanted to award ALL your work which is why they grouped them together as a compilation. They did not award you 3 Gold cubes, they awarded you 1 Gold cube for all 3 projects.
They had very few Gold winners, and they didn't want to award only 1 of the books, so they grouped them together. "

HOLY SHIT! I got another gold cube this year! It's not a dream!!! And I did really know why people cried out when they had the happiest moment.

Thanks America, Thank you ADC! It will be really helpful to get my O-1 Visa!! Foooor suuuurrrreeee!!! :D
So, here's the winners' announce page that they posted today, and made me get excited to find my name again under the Illustration Category! :D (Thank you & Thank you!)

H.O.T- DONE!

Jungyeon's sixth handmade book H.O.T- only 5 books in the world! :D It's finally done. I couldn't just believe the fact that I was done, and made me extremely happy every morning for a while. No more pressure for school! GOD!Got Communication Arts 52 few days ago. For me, it was the most valuable thing than any others to be in! because it was my first time to get into the magazine, and it's my favorite Townies series about being a Korean/Chinese girl living in New York! - yay that's me!

Finally all done. I did make it! only next two days for the installation and everything will be really done!
It's time to enjoy my life finally!!!
NO MORE GOODY TWO- SHOES~!!

For five years in America, I ONLY did study. STUDY STUDY.! ( never been to Circle, some Koreans asked me. haha... where is it?...) I didn't really go to Korea Town either. ( once in a year?...)
Some people who first met me treated me as a normal Korean girl, because of my appearance?... but sorry, I'd say I'm not. (yeah...I'm abnormal...) but I miss Korea for sure.

I was never that kind of nerd in Korea, but I changed a lot while I lived/studied here alone. ( of course I have a sister)
Believe it or not, when I was in high school, my second year teacher highly recommended me to be a comedian. Some very famous celebrities went to the same high school as me at that time, so it could be a possible thing if my teacher really pushed.... haha

However, America made me change as a serious hard worker and extraordinary goody two-shoes. which is good for me in the Long Run.

Now, it's time to prepare my Artist Visa for a year.

I can't tell what the mission was, but the mission will be possible. hopefully soon! ;)
The funny thing is that they all wanted me to keep working hard. sigh.... haha

Woman Power 03- Sue Coe

Sue Coe (born 1951 in Tamworth, Staffordshire) is an English artist and illustrator working primarily in drawing and printmaking, often in the form of illustrated books and comics. She grew up close to a slaughterhouse and developed a passion to stop cruelty to animals. Coe studied at the Royal College of Art in London, lived in New York City from 1972 to 2001. She currently lives in upstate New York. Her work is highly political, often directed against capitalism and cruelty to animals.

Her work has appeared in The New York Times, RAW, and Time magazine, and her paintings have been exhibited in galleries and museum around the world, including New York's Museum of Modern Art. Her previous books include How to Commit Suicide in South Africa (1983), X (1986), Dead Meat (1996) and Pit's Letter (2000). Judith Brody co-authored Bully with Coe in 2004.

One of my big dream is that having all these silkscreen equipments (should be exactly the same) in my house. So that I can print all the time at home FOREVER! :D

Waited for drying screens. A nice crab image printed by Dominick in 2008 on my apron! I really want to say goodbye to wearing my Vans. (want to be a woman!)

The most labor-intensive part of the book, folding, gluing, printing cover ( the real BIACH!), and binding. Standing for 6 hours for folding them all... and they HAD TO be all precise!!!
Bonus pic- Murray's Bagels in Chelsea where is Tomi and I's hot spot. I went twice in last week for having plain Tofu cream cheese bagel for dinner. haha (never for breakfast... sorry, too heavy...) Their tofu cream cheese is DOPE!

I got an exciting news yesterday from IPCNY.
Two pieces of H.O.T got into their New Prints 2011/Summer.
All my idols were exhibited from the gallery, so it's my big honor to be in.
Sorry to not post my new work until May, but it will be better you check out them at our thesis show!

SVA MFAI Thesis show opening: May 5th 6-8pm at SVA gallery in Chelsea. (I'll post details later)

IPCNY show will run from June 9, 2011 - July 29, 2011.
The opening reception will be Thursday, June 9, with an artist's reception from 5 to 6pm, followed by the public opening from 6 to 8pm.

Last Month's critique. Half done at that time!

I finally ran out of printing all the separations that I made today. I had a lot fun so far!
Now I have to do more idea sketches for four more pages that I have to entirely change.
AWWWW..... JOSH! and DAVID!!!! boooooooooo!
I was too lazy to make good-looking idea sketches, so then I kept sending crabs to my heroes, and they didn't even look at it. ha! hahahahaha....
So I made my mind to make at least 3 sketches for each with all my heart in it... :D
I AM SORRY.... ha....hahahahaha.

This year my second OPT started after May.
When I realized it was my second time to extend to stay in America, I was really sad for a while.
There's nothing wrong with the second OPT, but it made me miss home. a lot.

In 2009, when I graduated my undergrad school at SVA, There's a lot of reasons I have to stay in America.
And I was like a dreamy, and some dreams came true fortunately.

Now, in 2011, I found there's only one reason I have to stay in America.
Only one reason is not good enough, and the one reason is I love what I'm doing here.
So then, I decided to make another important reason to stay in America. or I have to. or I must.
After that, I'll make ten more reasons.

It took a month I finally have time for blogging!
I got some amazing news since the beginning of 2011, and felt like 2011 is going to be the best year!

1. Jan 3rd, 2011
Altpick 7 - First place overall winner in Illustration Series category.
2. Jan 6th, 2011
Society of Illustrators West (SILA) 49th annual - American Boys got a silver medal from the Graphic novel/ Comic books category, and Movado got into the Advertising category.
3. Jan 18th, 2011
Print Magazine Hand Drawn Competition -Selected as one of the inaugural Illustration competition winners.

All I can say is "Thank you so much!"

I finally started printing this semester for my H.O.T book.
I'm so excited to do it again what I can do the best, but one word for me -'hectic'
Even though I became tired-groggy- and a zombie at the end of the week, I had real fun with the heavy screens!
All my joints and shoulders said - "you're insane" but yeah.... I am truly insane for my work!

I'm not going to post the images I made until the thesis show at the end of April, but here is the first test proof images I printed yesterday.
Papers and colors are going to be changed.

I'll post the award images as soon as they are ready.

NY Times gave me to have a more realistic experience in terms of how newspapers work yesterday.
For this piece, I only got about 6 hours, and my hand became like an automatic drawer.
I really enjoyed the challenged experience and also made me ensure why I want to be an illustrator in America.
I'm not 100% satisfied with the final piece, but glad I did my best for it.

It was sleepless week since last Wednesday night, and today feels like a weekend to me.
I got an unbelievable e-mail from NY Times, and they needed my illustrations for their new blog named Townies which just started a month ago.

The story is about being a Korean/Chinese woman in New York City, and the amazing writer is Mary H.K. Choi who is also Korean!
So I yelled, THIS IS PERFECT FOR ME!!!!! and yes, it totally worked well with my 5 years of life experiences in NY!

I really enjoyed the story I illustrated last week, and you can see the 4 different idea sketches and finals here.
Every Wednesday after 6pm in November, it will be updated, so please stay tuned for the interesting Korean woman living in NY stories with my illustrations!!!

I don't know how can I show my thankful mind to NY Times, but all I can do is creating my best illustrations for them even though I can't sleep in November!!

Thesis process and Ink Plot

I got this yesterday in the mail, and didn't expect to see my work in it!
the last spread of My Second "ex-boyfriend" is in page 39! :D

I finally started on my thesis project!
It is about Hot+ Vegan, and going to be a book. :)
As always, I enjoyed making funny ideas for each page, and made me keep smiling.
Hope it goes well until the end of my second year.

While I was working on this book project, I couldn't stop smiling/laughing/singing.
Yeah, American Boy (2008) by Estelle is the best song for FOB girls who live in America.
The obvious thing is that girls love my book for sure! ( even American girls!!)
Even though Miss Eggplant met various American boys in the book, I'm still curious about American boys~ ( or a boy?) ha!

The Book Show will be held in the gallery (SVA main building)- 209 East 23rd Street.
The dates for the show are September 23rd -October 13th.
The reception will be held on Tuesday, September 28th from 6 - 8pm.

We already finished the installation, and you can see my American Boys in the lobby.

I spent two more days to finish this piece! The title of this piece should be 'Sun Watch'?
We took photos on the red carpet! :D
About an hour later the painting started.

My sister silently visited, and didn't even say hello to me. And took some paparazzi photos! Thanks sis.

I finally catch my breath since my second year started.
Lots of things to do continuously came up to me, and I shouted happily.
The first thing was on September 10th Fashion's night out New York at Movado's live painting.
My concept was making the watch as a big sunflower because people called Movado 'Sun Watch'. ( yeah, we had to study about Movado's history from their thick book! )
It gave me inspirations, so I made the piece 'happy sunflower fields'.
There is a silent auction at Movado in December, and I hope people like my piece.
I'm still waiting for my BEAUTIFUL watch!

I was honored to be a part of this AMAZING project recommended from my department, and I'm getting nervous day by day to prepare of it.

Only few days left made me sad already.
This Summer was unexpectedly busy, and I appreciated making my time worthy.
The only thing I did for myself was running three tracks of the 1.58 mile running track at the Central Park almost everyday.
My sister sometimes worried about my obsession of running, and said,
" I saw an Asian girl today at the subway who seemed to run from the Central Park had elephant sized legs... your legs are going to be like her if you keep running everyday!"
But yeah, it sounded impossible and I hope my legs remained human size.

Rabid Rabbit Goes to Hell (Issue #12)

About two months ago, I was asked to be one of contributors for Rabid Rabbit #12 issue!
I love comics and it was only two pages doing as a first time contributor.
It seemed easy as pie for me at first.

However, I've ONLY drew, dreamy, lovely, funny, humorous, funky, gross, foods stuff so far, it was the first time to draw scary things for me.
As a Vegan girl, I chose Anti Fur, and made the SCARY~~~ story. haha

It took twice( or three?) times than I usually spent for two page comics before, and made me like a real crazy mad woman like the main character's face!!!!!
Looking at the reference photos made me really disgust sometimes, and my head had only negative shits.

But, yeah.... as you see, it's all done!
and I returned to a positive Miss Eggplant again! ( I guess... )
Thanks to Marshall for recommending me to do the honored stuff, and hope my work is good match for the issue!

Here is the taking Roller Coaster with Jonathan print.
When I printed this page, his faces all disappeared from the thin line drawing, so I retouched 30 pages of his "gross faces" :)
Once I thought every color was too bright, but my teacher said it seems like getting the brilliant sun everywhere.
So I left the colors, and really happy with it now.
:)

Need more time to make it perfect.

This whole week must be the busiest week in the Summer.
I totally forgot to take photos of the last three colors when I printed... ( yeah... I'm not really close with taking photo stuff... ) sorry I missed it.
However! I figured how I'm gonna bind the entire book with my precious teacher David Sandlin, and got some advise from Sakura & Dominick. - Thanks always! xo

I hope 'Miss Eggplant's American Boys' is not only my personal story. - this is what I'm worried about...

Silkscreen process 01

Color separations. Even though they're all black, I could imagine the color after they printed. The top one is going to be Pink.
Love love love Grey that I made! no white and black in it! Making cool Grey color was the most difficult thing for me for the past two years! :P and now I can see myself as an expert of making the awesome Grey which is my favorite color! :)
While I was printing, I mostly put (or threw away) some color test papers and trial squeezes on the floor. (and I cleaned completely after I finished as Goody Two Shoes. )
Pink color separations printed!
Green color printed! I realized that the boy's hair couldn't be the same green because he is Blondy Mr. Bartlett! so it made me make another yellow separation after this. The unexpected situations sometimes happened in the World of Silkscreen which I SHOULD love... :P

I was expected to see finished this piece by today, but printing three color separations were enough for a "weak" vegan girl.
Mostly, before printing the line color at last, I couldn't really see how much the final work successfully done.
That's why Silkscreen is much harder medium than others. (Of course... there is another evil existed whose name is Etching!!)
Sometimes Silkscreen pigments felt like using Watercolor somewhat. It because of they are both water-based?...
And cruelly it never allowed the artists to make any mistakes....

Well, I hope you enjoy seeing my working process.
I made the hardest work plan for this whole week!
And, seems like I started right today.

Broadway silkscreen page

I always enjoy doing silkscreen, but the only problem is making me worn out like a sick person at the end of the day.
I've printed this page for two days, and felt real pain especially shoulders and arms. (and every single muscles...)
This page is going to be an exhibition to show at Broadway Gallery for the first two weeks of July called London Underground on BROADWAY, undergroundonbroadway.wordpress.com
After I finished printing this page, I got an e-mail from the curator Sophie.
She said she wants to use this page for the postcard for the show!!!
What a coincidence!! I'm so happy and hope she likes the changed color.

It is always nice to get along with other people at the print shop, but please please please leave me alone while I'm printing.
I can't be nice when you are asking some questions while I'm printing because the pigments are dried really quick, and I don't want to ruin my work.
And I can't really hear what you are asking because I only listen the sounds of squeeze...
If you've done silkscreen before, you might understand what I'm saying.
It is the most sensitive time for me.... :(

I'm happy with the color came out better than digital work, and hope it fits well with other pages.!!

Nurse Jackie Season 2, Ep11

After I got some rest about a month, I tried to work hard again at the studio.
I called/ texted one of my bros Ben to reunion G-spot, but he finally showed up today. ( lazy ASS!)
When Will came to the studio, he made a song such as- G~spot~G~spot~~Lalala~
I said we are ALL GIRLS! :P
I became too talkative with Ben until Pat complained he didn't want to listen our conversations.
At the end of the day, Ben found out my prints from Nurse Jackie!!!
I just forgot it for a while, but made me really HAPPY to have a big smile on my face.
They framed really nice, and great match with the funky East Village apartment!
(but Ben said the girl plays slut!... oh...)

I was just surprised that it was ep 11! not, 12...
I might something related with number 11 for sure.
It is probably a lucky number for me.

I've been thinking of my future in America for past few days.
I might be disappointed with something that I disliked about.
But I'm sure I still love New York so much.

I've been lazy for about two weeks after summer vacation started.
But I thought that I deserved to get some rest for a while, and it was enough to make me boost to enjoy working again.

Here is the process of Playboy Magazine which is offered from school, and don't know my work can get in the magazine or not.
Either way, I pretty enjoyed reading the story and made a new editorial piece.

Drawing ONLY Eggplant girl and American Boys for a semester made me confuse creating a new illustration, but I realized that inking something made me really happy naturally. :)
(That's very dork...yeah...)

If you met someone and he/ she gave you a big inspirations for your dream, you are probably a lucky person.
For me, I can directly say one of MY teachers who made me feel like a lucky person is Marcos Chin.
This is the first work that I did for his class in Fall 2007.
It's funny because at that time, I had no interests of Vegetarian/Vegan things, but I did Vegetarian Tribal Gangsters and A Rabbit in a human coat not on purpose.

Now, I no longer want to paint my work, but looked at old stuff made me smile for a while and remind me the valuable memories.

I think my goody- two-shoes personality was a good match with his class.
When I got this e-mail with revising sketch of mine, I felt like I already found a genuine teacher of my life.
I'd never met a teacher who revised and suggested, and sent reference photos for my work.

this looks great - but now it's too much "gangster" and not enough
"tribal"...
i attached your sketch below, but added a few more things...
maybe the 2 guys are wearing more "vegetarian tribal accessories"?
or
perhaps give the guy on the left, more necklaces... or have the both
of them with some marks on their faces, like war paint.
i thought it might be funny to have the guy on the right holding some
sort of club - but maybe it looks like a mix between a large stick
and broccoli..
i love the birds in the sky as well... it makes the city look sort of
like a jungle...
also think of the environment and how you can make it more "tribal"
also...
anyway, you can take these suggestions and start working on the final.

This was first, but I worked much harder week by week for the rest of his class until the end.
I always looked forward to every 12 o'clock on Thursdays, and really enjoyed every single assignment he gave us.
Some people asked me if they took his class could change their lives too, but I'd say it all depends on how much you did for the class.
If you spent most of your time hanging out, dating, drinking, and shopping, and expected to your teachers change your life, I'm sure you are still a big baby.
Teachers never change your life. It all depends on you.

The title is "I love NY's Street Vendors."
I'm not 100% happy for this book, but like the way it came out well on the brown papers.

I can't believe I've never missed Carol's class even one time.
Half of the classes were field trips = on location drawing.
From her class, I found out NY has so many unknown beautiful places.

Ariyana Suvarnasuddhi who is a brilliant senior illustration student in MICA asked me to interview for her thesis project.
Her major theme of work is food, and has created great images based on Asian culture.
She made awesome questions all about me and my work, and I'd like to share some questions that people occasionally asked me. :)

Do you consider the fact that you had to learn American culture in order to work in American illustration as an advantage, disadvantage or double-edged sword for your work?

For about two years, I had a hard time adapting to American culture with regards to my work and personal life.

I saw everything in my narrow view that I had had for 23 years in Korea, and struggled with using the second language. However, after a while, I realized that my Asian base could be used an advantage of my work. Many Americans are interested in Asian culture, but I have a totally different view. Even though I have great painting and drawing skills in art, if I didn’t really understand cultures, they are useless. Illustration is a language, so it’s more important for artists to absorb different cultures in their life.

How did you come up with the idea for Eggplant girl? Most of your themes revolved around food, religion, and self-image/memoirs. Do you wonder where these themes stem from?

I decided to become vegan when I started Grad school. Since then, my major dishes changed to vegetables, and I was compelled to study about vegan life. When my mom visited me last summer, she said “ American eggplants are huge~!!” because Korean eggplants are less substantial. What my mom said inspired me. The shape of American eggplants reminded me of a chubby body, and I was attracted by its name. How come Egg+Plant could be a name of a vegetable, and it was funny enough for me. Then I put my character into Miss Eggplant.

Most of my works are from my personal life experiences. Sometimes I’m producing the drawings to my work using symbols. Most of the characters are people who are around me during the time.

Since your current work is a series of comics, do you see yourself as fine art or comic oriented? There are some stories that are very personal, like your ex-boyfriend series, did you feel embarrassed about showing them at first?

Yes, I did. My fine art base is the strongest thing I have. It helps me think more out of the box using shifting approaches and a variety of styles in all kinds of my work, and made my eyes open wide. I didn’t really have so many ex- boyfriends, but I thought as long as I made them funny stories even though it will be my fake autobiography, it was going to be a cool project. But I was embarrassed when people believed I had seven- ex boyfriends. For now, I have no plan to continue the project. (I’m truly conservative about this matter.)

Digital printer made me really miss working at the print shop.
It is much easier and faster for me to silkscreen than print out by computer.
I wasted so many papers...

Here is my first spread for the American Boys book.
Now, I realized that it was quite a huge project to finish in a semester. ( just keep living in a dork life.)

I'm glad now I'm drawing the last page of American Boys.
Even though I made a rule, I drew some American Boys randomly or accidently. ( I should have asked in a relationship or not...!!) lol
The boys who were already drawn in the pages all wanted to be the boy in the center-poster size page.
Four boys came to my studio, and asked " Is this me? Is this me?"....O.M.G... It was too obvious that the boy definitely didn't look like them. haha
I realized the truth of American Boys= Full of Jealous! :P
But I'm glad they were willing to be drawn by me even though some boys became really gross... (sorry Jonathan...and Rich, I drew you, but you were E.T...) sorry, but it's too late to change... :P

Hello art geeks!
Today is Wednesday which has Marshall & Carl's critique class.
My plans are finishing inking until the end of March, and starting coloring in April.
It is REAL ENDLESS!!!!!
The beautiful weather is mismatch with a geeky girl who has to finish a book by the end of April.

H.O.W.E.V.E.R!
I stopped by a cute vegan bakery Baby Cakes today, and bought four cupcakes!!!
Oh, yes, it made my day!!! ha!

I never feel like or say I am "giving up" my favorite foods to be vegan.
Those words have a negative connotation, like I am sacrificing something.
I am NOT giving up anything, and look at those cute cupcakes!
Their tastes are even better and totally lighter, and I don't need to feel guilty!
I am simply empowered now and able to make educated, controlled choices about what I will and won't put my body.
Even if I am spending more on vegan/organic food, I'll save money in the long run.

Sorry, these days my head only includes 49% of my work, and 49% of vegan things.
That's why I'm blah blah blah~~

Rainy Sunday

Once in two weeks, my sister and I clean our apartment.
Last week, I tried to feel lighter physically, mentally, emotionally with fasting for ten days.
Of course, I gave up one and a half day after I starting... sorry... :(
The reason I tried to do it is keep drawing on the desk EVERYDAY without my personal life made me feel fatty-dork-geek.
But all I can do right now is, giving up fasting and waiting til Summer vacation.
I wish New York's weather has only Summer.
No wind,rain,snow.... :(

After finishing cleaning, we usually ate some special food.
Today's special food was sesame kale!
I tried to imitate Whole Foods' sesame kale without recipe, but my sister said mine is even better!
But right after she ate some, she baked some turkey bacon for fulfilling her stomach.
nah!

I stopped by Desert Island few days ago, and got the Unlovable vol.2!
It made my day!
I love love love it so much! and couldn't stop laughing while I was reading.
I wish I could make Miss Eggplant book as funny as Unlovable.
But I still need much more efforts.
All I have to do is working hard because "school is my first priority."
:P

I finished coloring for the second ex- boyfriend story.
Now, I have three copies of mini comic books! (I'll make more... if people like it!)
I'm planning to submit for an exhibition.

I realized that drawing too gross and disgusting face and body like this are too much for all.
My sister said only I like that kinds of things.
O.M.G...
My teacher also said only three pimples in the face are OK, so my upcoming project Miss Eggplant is going to have a "pretty" face with ONLY few pimples.

I hope this work got into the show.

I know, what happened to me... how could I do blogging again?
I can tell it because of being effected by Julie Powell- she posted Five hundreds something recipes up in 365 days.

yes, I'm not an enjoyable-cook like her, and I'm a student illustrator who is working on a silly-funny book named Miss Eggplant's American Boys.
My teachers expect to see one finished piece by Wednesday, but I didn't decide what color I'm going to use, so I'm still doing endless drawing/ inking/drawing/inking...sigh...
But, I'm really into this project than any others that I did past 4 years, so it made me naturally concentrate well.

I drew Harold & Kumar as two of the American boys, so I watched their movie last night again.
Harold was a symbol of Twinkie, and one of his white friends had a Yellow Fever.
Cindy Kim liked Harold, but he liked Maria.
He didn't even talk well to Maria because he's too shy as a quite clean Asian guy.
Before Herold and Kumar took the glider from a mountain, Kumar said something about his parents, and it's about American dreams and F.O.B.
The honest reality things drove me crazy about the movie.
That's my style.! I love that!!!

I naturally learned American culture day by day through my classes and friends.
Somethings made me embarrass sometimes,but all of them are good to know living here.
I hope I'll be a likable person with well-understood American culture, not made them love only my work.

I wish I'll do well until the end.

Yes. Today is Sunday, so instead of showing my work process, I'm gonna post something else up.
I watched the movie Julie & Julia two days ago, and it has been stuck some parts of my head since then.
I can't believe Julie Powell made a miracle in her tiny apartment's kitchen in Queens.
I used to cook very often until I lived in Brooklyn in 2007, but since I moved twice afterward my hobby had changed. ( to silkscreen,, I guess??)
And another big change of my life is I started becoming Vegan/Vegetarian since the summer of 2009.
At that time, I just wanted to my body and soul clean, and I didn't care anything about animals.
However, after I read a book named Skinny Bitch about a month ago, I decided to be strict Vegan for animals and the world of hunger.
Now, I'm reading two books named Slaughter House, and Vegan- the new ethic of eating.
The books changed entire of my eating habit, and I really enjoy it.

So, here is my Vegan pasta recipe.
1. Left; I put a sliced Tofurky's fake sausage and carrot, onion, eggplant, garlic, and edamame with olive oil.
Right; tomato spinach fusilli in boiling water with a pinch of sea salt in 10 minutes.
2. put the cooked pasta in the fan, and fry them together.
3. add some eggplant marinara sauce.
4. Then, eat!

Warning: honestly, fake meats are not the same taste as REAL meat, and not as delicious as them. but, after you got used to their taste, you will realize that people can live without eating animals' carcass.

I've never forced anybody to be Vegan because it's a personal choice, but it changed my life already.
Unfortunately, Julie & Julia's recipe is not for Vegan, but I really like the movie.
From Julia Child and Julie Powell's successful stories, I might try to make some food for a while in my tiny tiny kitchen... I guess.

Here is an editorial image that I did last semester in Marshall's class.
We illustrated about making better America's education from an article of New York Times newspaper.
I had pretty hard time because I didn't know that apples symbolized education in America.

I've been sick for about a week.
One of my rules is NEVER absent my classes, but I did last night.
I felt dizzy and fever at the class, maybe it because of the heavy snow?...
or homesick...I guess....

I had hard time to get more blue pencils from art supply stores which were around SVA.-useless!
But I went to china town pearl with two hungry beasts yesterday.
Pearl only had four left...!!!
I need to get 100 of prismacolor col-erase BLUE pencils!!! greedy...yes.

I'm so excited to make this book.
My face kept smiling while I was drawing, and the song was stuck in my head. ( even Will's head too)

I drew all kinds of American boys in this book.

Sorry, this book cannot include,

1. Gay guys.( sorry, will, gant and ryan)
2. Married guys. (sorry, chi and chris)
3. In a relationship or broke up in past six months. (sorry...)
4. Grandpas or babies.( so sorry...)

However, I'm thinking of including Marshall, Carl and David are for extras.- special exceptions!

Here are some drawings from Essex Street Market.
I had fun with my homies, and ate lots of food there.
The guy who was drawn in cupcake page gave me a shock about my eating.
(I shared my hot carrot muffin and pistachio cupcake with three guys, but he thought I ate all by myself... yeah... mostly I ate... that's true)
He told me most Asian people not usually eat that much.
neh neh neh boo boo!!! but it was fun! and I'll definitely go his bakery again.

I enjoyed using pencils for my drawings, but not sure they are good enough.

Long time no blogging.
sorry blog.

I currently got some new books that I've waited for a long time.

Firstly, I got an AI 28 book which includes my sushi images published last November.
It was loooong waiting for me, and it arrived my mailbox just two days ago.

Second, from my undergrad school's Illustration 30& Cartooning portfolio 2009.
They gave me 5 books each, and hundreds of tear sheets. I didn't expect to get them that much, so my arms have extra muscles now... and still sore...

The last one is, Synonym Finder. haha. I'll memorize all of them, and make you surprise soon!! very soon.

For this semester's drawing on location book project, I went to Barnes & Noble.
Always I felt bad when I drew people without asking.
I tried to draw a dad and son at the children section, but as soon as the dad noticed that I drew them, he hurried to leave.

Wow... where should I choose for drawing on location?
Willy and Benny said I'm so lazy because I wanted to pick one place in my neighborhood, but.... I don't know where is the best place.

However, I got the Wild Thing's monster 75% off price from the B&N.

Nurse Jackie & Hotaru no Hikari

Yesterday, I couldn't even breath well after hard core exercising from the print shop, I got a voice mail.
An unbelievable amazing awesome thing was happened to me because Lauren, who is an art department coordinator of Nurse Jackie in Show time, bought my two prints from the Desert Island!
I shared my good news with my lovely homies and Marshall today, and I signed the agreement.
I'm so excited to see my Buddha's from American TV show!
Now, I have something to do for Christmas break- watching Nurse Jackie season 1 from Hulu!

Another "awesome" drama series that I recommend to watch you who has no plan for Christmas is Hotaru no Hikari.
The 80% of main character's life style is the same as mine.
(the main character is too cute unlike me and live with a man, so it can't be 100%)
The main character is a kind of homebody girl, and met her prince at work.
But the prince is different as her dream in reality.
I watched this series 2 years ago, and still this is my favorite Japanese drama that I've ever watched.
Her story is somewhat similar as Miss Eggplant's. haha

I did the top two drawings last week in carol's class.
That was my amazing unexpected experience of drawing Dirty Martini show girls at school.
Drawing various models is the greatest worth while I study abroad in America.
If I was in Korea, I never had that kind of experiences there.

The middle two pictures that I took today for preparing tomorrow's open studio.
My new works up on my studio! but not yet in the website.

Today, we went to Gleason's Gym for carol's drawing class.
It was also an unforgettable experience drawing boxers. ( oh, smells also.)
Me and my new pink camera in the mirror. :D

We went to American Museum of Natural History yesterday for drawing class.
The assignment was four drawings of post card designs.
I really enjoyed the time and putting my character into the postcards, and everybody said "you are funny~haha."

I made the first and second images for the front and back images of my finished postcard.

I should have posted up my studio pictures, but my work wasn't ready yet before.
But after forcing myself to finish inking Buying Lenin at the studio, I just took the photos.
I'm still working on it, but my right shoulder told me that he wants to get some rest.
I hope to start printing next Monday.

I went to Desert Island with my genius awsome friend Tomi today.

We both had some good news, and my Public Bath book was also sold few days ago. ( not only sushi book...!!)

Desert Island is my favorite book store which only has awsome stuff that I really like.

The thing I really like is if I sold my stuff there. I can also get my favorite books instead of money. If i want.

I traded part of my money on my favorite books which I borrowed from the SVA library since I was there. ( I borrowed Vanessa's book one hundred times... lol)

I was so much inspired by Jeffrey, Vanessa and Adrian's stories to make my seven ex-"boyfrineds" comic.

Especially Vanessa's book is the one which made me start doing comic.

The only different thing is - Jeffrey and Vanessa's stories about relationships are all true, but my boyfriends are not "REAL BOYFRIENDS"...unfortunately... ( 7... sometimes people asked me, " Did you have seven ex- boyfriends?? my answer is, " OMG, I wish I could...)

So, now I'm really happy for having them all to myself.

But, I couldn't buy SHORTCOMINGS by Adrian... it was sold out. So, I chose the favorite chapter of OPTIC NERVE.

I'm also really appreciated the kindest people who I never met and bought my clumsy books.

New book project.

Here is the project that I started this semester for a class.- Buying Lenin by Miroslav Pankov.

It will be double sided accordion silkscreen book. I hope I could be successfully done at the end of this semester.

I was out of mind for the past few days, and then I finally realize that oh...I'm in New York now... I have to wake up from the stupid dreams.

The last picture is a bonus - me and my new dog at the running track in Central Park. I'm glad to have this dalmatian even though it's not a real. :D

One beautiful day, we went to governor's island for location drawing.

We drew our journey through the festival from one end to the other.

For preparing to make a masterpiece, my friend and I bought a cup of Heineken.

It helped me to refresh, but it didn't really work well for my drawings...lol

I really enjoyed the time,but none of them are my favorite... unfortunately...
